Colder ultracold fermions

We are currently hiring master and PhD students on this project. If you are interested to develop a next generation fermi gas experiment, contact Christian.

The motivation

Ultracold quantum gases routinely reach record low temperatures in the nanokelvin regime. However, to explore emergent phenomena in strongly correlated quantum matter this is often not cold enough. In fact, fermionic quantum gas experiments are limited to about 3 to 5 percent of the fermi temperature. This limit has been reached already 15 years ago and it has not significantly been challenged since then.

We plan to develop a new ultracold fermi gas experiment, which, on the one hand optimizes the isolation from the environment for minimal heating rates and, on the other hand, explores new routes in fermion cooling.
